The Arm-R-Seal oil-based topcoat is a long-lasting, tough wood finish that comes in a pry-off lid. When purchasing it in a variety of sizes on the market that can help reduce waste if you are a very small or large kitchen table.

Since this product is oil-based and it has a few drawbacks. It looks nice for a dry rich amber color but if you are not expecting it or it can’t provide a final look, it can be an issue.
The oil content means the finish working a long time to cure. In fact, the company recommended because you don’t clean the table about 30 days after applying the coat.
Finally, the oil-based finish is more effective for woodworkers. It might take a bit of a long time to get the hang of the application process but once you do the last result bring professional looks.

You can be applied to the finish need a natural bristle brush, a lambswool applicator or a foam brush.
One of the big benefits of this finished that wipe-on poly is it drying. If you apply thin coats, the finish dries quickly and this an advantage when you are working outdoor are or dusty workshops.
If the faster your finish dries, the dirt, dust or debris will not be trapped in it. If it a thin layer that takes a couple of hours to dry completely.
After use sandpaper to scuff that is gently applied next coat. This coat is extremely forgiving so that it’s easy to achieve a beautiful end look.
It is important to note that the Minwax finish is great to clear that probably going to change the color of your wood kitchen table.
This product changes color but it’s a visible and oil-based product. If you are looking like a warmer look to your wooden table, this could be a great choice for you.
The drawback is the number of coats that your suit you needs. It’s recommended for 2 or 3 coats. If your kitchen table use heavy use, you will probably need four or five coats for durability.

3. Rust-Oleum Oil Polyurethane Finish
For those of us searching for a polish that would be used for our kitchen table, Rust-Oleum has provided you with what you need. This product has been designed majorly for places that are used often, so it is 100% durable.
If your wooden kitchen table has an attractive grain, this polish is a sure way to call attention to it. It is made to permit the grain to show through it. The glowing tone of the finish displays the complexity of each grain of the wood in your table.
Not to forget that the finish has a very pungent smell. Although that is to be expected, it is advisable to work in an airy environment. The finish dries to touch, so it is a splendid idea to wipe up any drops instantly.
Despite the labelling that it is clear, the poly finish adds a golden touch to the wood used. Also, it adds a satin finish to provide a classic and natural look.
I suggest this Rust-Oleum finish if you’re polishing a wooden table with a visible grain. To avoid yellowing after drying, do not use it over paint.
- 1Applied smoothly on the wooden surface
- 2Use right from the package
- 3Dries into a durable and hard surface
- 1There will be a yellowish outcome if used on top of the paint.
- 2It takes up to four coatings before visibility
- 3Some of the spots dry up to give a white colour
4. General Finishes Enduro-VAR Finish
One thing that I appreciate the manufacturers for is their honesty in describing their product. They say that the finish will amber as time goes by.
At least, you know what you are buying before you take that action. The Enduro-VAR finish is explicitly designed to be more durable than attractive. Hence, it will be the right choice for you if your kitchen table has a high amount of visits daily.
This coating doesn’t have many bad reviews
On average, this wood varnish gets excellent compliments. The stats say that one out of ten reviewers is not satisfied. Majority of the positive reviews dwell on the fact that it is a water-based finish with similar characters of an oil-based finish.
This implies that it produces a glossier, shinier look while preserving the grain of wood surfaces to an extent.
High Shelf-life over Attractiveness
Another key feature of this paint is that it is long-lasting. It doesn’t give off a soft covering that looks and feels like plastic.
Instead, it produces a solid surface that can persevere over most conditions for a long time. This means that the general finish coating is appropriate for outdoor use, even if the product label does not elaborate on that.
Biggest Disadvantage: Cost
On the wrong side, this is a quite expensive finish. It is drawing with the ECOS paint for the most costly wood varnish. However, the cost goes down substantially if you purchase this paint in gallons instead of in quarts.
- 1It is a combination of water-based paint and oil-based paint
- 2It creates a durable coating partly because of its water-resistant property
- 3Available in flat finish, gloss finish, satin finish, and semi-gloss finish
- 4The price becomes affordable on when purchased in gallon size
- 1It is on the list of most expensive wood varnishes
- 2It will turn amber as the coating becomes old
- 3Although it has oil-based paint property, it can’t be used as a replacement
5. Waterlox Original Satin Finish
Do you need a show off to highlight the details of your kitchen table? The Waterlox original satin finish does this job explicitly.
It has a gentle, satisfying sheen that emphasizes on the carvings and carpentry. Nevertheless, it’s not 100% glossy because you see fingerprints on the table.
Tung oil, which is used to make Waterlox, penetrates beneath the surface of your wooden table, creating a hydrophobic finish. That means that it opposes the damage of spilt coffee, heavy usage, and other liquids.
If your kitchen table experiences a standard level of activity, this would be a great choice. Also, its maintenance is not painstakingly done.
Don’t forget that the Waterlox finish can’t be used solo — you’ll also need to apply its sealer or another brand of sealer.
Waterlox is highly recommended for your kitchen table if you want a supple gloss. It withholds low and medium-use household activities easily.
- 2Partially made from inexhaustible organic resources
- 3Gentle and supple glossy finish
- 1Pungent and irritating smell
- 2It requires an additional sealer
- 3The product tends to leave streaks on the surface
6. Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane Finish
Rust-Oleum did a great job in creating a unique and useful coating for your wooden furniture. The basic idea responsible for this coating is to provide a clear coat that can be applied thickly.
This is will not only increase coverage but also reduce the time you would ordinarily use to finish your table.
It is a Time-Saver
Time-efficiency seems to be one of the significant reasons for designing this coating. As I mentioned earlier, this finish is supposed to be applied in thick sheets.
This means that you have fewer recoats per project, and thus more time is saved. Also, it can be said that this dries fast to touch, which supplements its time-efficiency.
A Serious Imperfection
The Varathane has been manufactured with a self-levelling formula. This property is necessary for a coating that is applied three times thicker than other types. However, based on my experience, the product doesn’t meet up to this standard.
Although customers give countless good reviews for this product, the negative reviews are quite steady. Most of them complain that they had a tough time applying a level coating.
In other words, the self-levelling feature is not as efficient as advertised. Some have even complained that the finish ruined their furniture upon applying it.
A Good Choice for Those with a mini-budget
On the other hand, this is one of the cheapest finishes on the list, which makes it the golden prize for those on a tight budget.
The levelling issue can be solved by using a thinner coat. Although the label on the container tells you to apply a 3x coating, stick to less for higher results.
- 1Directed to be applied thickly, saving time and reducing recoating
- 2The price is considerably low. The cheapest finish to buy if you are getting the quart size
- 3It is time-efficient with its self-levelling formula
- 4It has a superior coverage
- 5Dry to touch in a whiz
- 6It forms a secure, tough layer like water-based varnishes
- 1The viscosity of the paint is high. Therefore, it is not easy to spread smoothly
- 2The advertised self-levelling feature is not efficient
- 3The surface that it is applied on yellows after some time
7. Old master Satin Finish
Right from the manufacturer’s desk, this product is meant for more exquisite projects. Disclaimer: Please do not use this kind of polish on your outdoor furniture or your floor.
To top it all, the designers specifically mentioned that this product is not suitable for tiles and floors.
Beauty over Durability
Just like an oil-based finish, this coating leaves you with a soft surface that is quite simple to dent or chip. Old furniture and other high-quality wood surfaces are the specific regions in which this product will be useful. To buttress, Old Masters is very efficient for its purpose.
Very suitable for its designed Purpose
A fantastic attribute of this product is the excellent reviews it gets from satisfied customers. A couple of reports were examined, and not a single one had something negative to say.
This is partly due to the Old Masters, who use a special coating that focuses on a specific market and gets it right.
- 1The oil-based formula provides a striking effect
- 2The jelly texture permits the coating to be applied with a piece of fabric
- 3It leaves a gentle and soft finish at the end
- 4It is suitable for archaic and antique furniture
- 5The fee is not off the roof
- 6There are hardly any negative reviews
- 1It is not suitable for projects that need resistance to force
- 2It is not advisable health-wise to use your hand as a means of applying the paint. This is due to the bad smell coming from the varnish
8. ECOS Paints Wood Varnish
Another water-based we are going to look at is the ECOS semi-gloss finish. It is meant for the environmental perfectionists among us.
It is wholly made with no harmful compounds, which means that it will not release any offensive odours and it’s excellent for the kitchen
A tremendous idea for those with delicate lungs
If you have any health condition related to your respiratory system, this finish is likely to be your saving grace.
It would allow an asthmatic person, for example, to complete their project successfully, without falling into a major crisis. However, this kind of issuer is not a big deal or people without health conditions.
No thoughts about pollution
The name of the company, ECOS, originated from the word eco-friendly, which means their products are safe for the people and the ecosystem as a whole.
Since their paint is a water-based coating that does not make use of polyurethane, it is easy to accept their claim that they’re eco-friendly.
The manufacturers made an effort to abstain from adding any pesticides or harmful substances to the paint. Also, they made sure that none of these toxic chemicals is absorbed into the soil. Overall, this item has its right side as well.
The Mind-blowing Advantages
This product saves time because it dries rapidly when compared to its counterparts. ECOS varnish will be reliable dry within 30-45 minutes and can be recoated in 2 hours.
This is quite impressive when compared to most of the other finishes. In conclusion, the all-natural formula means that you can easily clean up any mess made with a bar of soap and water.
- 1No harmful odour that irritates the whole respiratory tract
- 2No yellowing after a long time
- 3Reveals all ingredients used for its production
- 4Eco-friendly certified to assure you that it doesn’t pollute the environment
- 5Dries rapidly in just thirty minutes and can be recoated in two hours
- 1Also one of the least affordable on the list
- 2Not crucial for people with standard breathing history
9. Valspar Cabot Polyurethane Finish
Like the General finish Enduro-VAR, this is another product that combines the features of a water-based and an oil-based finish.
Unlike the second choice on my review list, this one is meant to offer the sheen and beauty of an oil-based finish while maintaining the sturdy and robust finish that is common with water-based finishes.
Another Cross-breed Clear Coat
I observed that this cross-breed achieves its goal. It looks much better than a water-based polish, being free from the dreary and flexible look that polyurethane has when it gets old.
Simultaneously, it does an outstanding job of resisting scrapes and scratches. I always wondered how they achieved this feature, but I realized this important fact: the price is on a large scale.
Rapid Drying for oil-based finishes
Normally, cross-breed coatings don’t usually dry quickly. However, this coating dries faster than water-based paints in less than sixty minutes.
Although you have to wait for about three hours before you can recoat it. It is acceptable for oil paints, though not as quick as others on the list.
They are available in half-pints only
Sadly, this is the most expensive finish on our list in case you are buying in bulk.
In other words, this is not the finish for big projects unless you have a big budget. The major con of this product is the ridiculous price tag attached to it because it poses an obstacle for those that can’t afford it.
- 1A perfect combination of water-based paint and oil-based paint
- 2Fast in drying when compared to its rivals
- 3Leaves you with a sturdy finish
- 4Its sheen is higher than regular water-based paint
- 1It can only be gotten at half-pints per buy
- 2Its price is relatively higher than the standard budget
10. Behlen Rockhard Table Urethane Varnish
Does your kitchen table receive a lot of traffic daily? If yes, then this Behlen Rockhard product is the perfect pick for you. The formula is hard when dry to it helps to resist all forms of scrapes and scratches.
The greatest thing about this finish is its longevity. It prevents scratches; it is also resistant to detergents and water. This is most useful if your kitchen table is used as a homework and play area.
After applying the finish, it needs a minimum of two days to dry under a temperature of seventy-two degrees and above wholly. If you live in a low temperate area, expect the solidifying time to be extended.
If you are planning to apply multiple coats, this won’t be an ideal paint because of the long drying gap. To buttress, you must wait for a minimum of fourteen hours between coats. Nevertheless, it can be managed if your work on your timing.
Generally, I suggest you take this product on the condition that you have an open shop with a lot of space and time for drying. Also, if you have the patience, achieving a long-lasting finish is guaranteed.
- 1The finishing is hard
- 2It is hydrophobic and resistant to chemicals
- 1Powerful smell
- 2Excessive drying time
- 3The application of the paint is complex
Finishes for Wood Kitchen Table Buying Guide
In the first part of this practical guide on wood finishes, I analyzed natural products to protect it such as wax, shellac, and oil. Now it is the turn of synthetic products, specifically polyurethane, varnish, and lacquer.
Although at first, it may seem that polyurethane, varnish and lacquer are the same product, this is not the case, each of them has its properties and peculiarities as you will see below.
WOOD FINISHES: POLYURETHANE
Polyurethane is a plastic-based resin that provides a thick, durable finish. You can find polyurethane water and solvent, as well as a matte, satin and glossy finish.
It is one of the varnishes with the best adherence to the surface and is most commonly used in interior carpentry, as it is suitable for woods that must resist constant rubbing.
The water-based polyurethane has the advantage that its smell is hardly noticeable, it is colorless and dries quite quickly, however it does not withstand heat or chemicals well, so its use is only recommended for interior furniture and that they are not going to have a very intensive use.
For its application it is convenient to use synthetic bristle brushes since, as with water-based wood floor paints, natural bristles are softened with an aqueous base (you can see my recommendations for brush or roller painting at this link ).
It can also be applied with foam and flocking rollers (peach skin). Also for a perfect finish, it is convenient to sand between coats with very fine grit sandpaper (300 or more).
On the other hand, oil-based or solvent-based polyurethane is more resistant to heat, shock, and scratches compared to water-based. It is the one that is usually used for wooden floors or platforms, tables and countertops.
Synthetic polyurethane adds a slight yellowish color to the wood that can enrich its natural appearance and raise the tone of the stains. It also has an intense odor, so it is convenient to work with it in a room that is well ventilated.
For its application, it is recommended to use a natural bristle brush or wool or multi-surface roller, although, as in the case of water-based polyurethane, sanding between coats will be the key to a perfect finish.
Finally, it should be borne in mind that when you want to protect a wooden furniture with a pickled effect, both water-based polyurethane and oil-based polyurethane can be applied interchangeably to paints on both bases, although oil-based polyurethane will provide an amber tone, more accentuated in the case of light-colored paints.
In particular, I have used matt polyurethane on a wood stained bookcase and on a decoupage-decorated desk table, obtaining a resistant finish in both cases.
WOOD FINISHES: VARNISH
In the same way as with polyurethane, varnishes can be classified into water-based and synthetic varnishes, and you can also choose between a matte, satin and gloss finish.
The varnish is a solution of oils or resinous substances in a solvent, which evaporates in contact with the air, leaving a protective layer on the surface to which it has been applied.
There are varnishes of natural origin (resins and essential oils of plants) and varnishes made with synthetic resins.
The acrylic varnishes or water dry very quickly but require many layers applied to obtain a result as strong as a synthetic varnish.
The synthetic varnishes quickly dry 5 hours and must wait 24 hours for recoating, preferably with a brush or pallet of natural bristles. Its main advantage is that it is very resistant, especially Spar or marine varnish, which is perfect for furniture that will be outdoors and exposed to moisture, as well as for exterior doors. This type of varnish protects the wood from both moisture and ultraviolet rays.
Regarding the finish, it should be borne in mind that a glossy varnish will intensify the color of the wood but will also make its imperfections stand out.
The satin varnish is the most widely used to protect floors, although it must be taken into account that it darkens over time. Finally, the matte varnish is quite resistant and is preferably used on doors and windows.
WOOD FINISHES: LACQUER
Lacquer gives the wood a shiny, smooth and long-lasting finish, but like the paint, it hides its original grain. Although it can be used on any type of wood, MDF boards (wood fiber chipboard) are best suited to obtain a smooth and homogeneous finish.
The main difference between lacquer and paint is that lacquer provides a more durable and crystalline finish than paint. In addition, its drying time is shorter and the color remains unchanged over time.
As the main disadvantage, I would highlight that it is necessary to have some practice to achieve a good finish and avoid the most common problems associated with lacquering: lack of adherence and lumps or "orange peel". It is also necessary to use a spray gun since its texture is more viscous than that of other finishes.
Lacquer or lacquer finish is often used to protect modern or contemporary interior furniture, although it can also be used to restore old furniture and give it a new look.
On the other hand, it is possible to combine any lacquer color (RAL, NCS and Pantone cards) with wood to create highly decorative and personalized furniture.
